merlin - of the sky
Purpose of the community:

An alliance between fanart and fanfiction: one fanartist, one fanfiction writer. Each challenge will give them a prompt. They will have to work together and come up with a piece of art (vid, poster, icons or comic strip) and a fic, each illustrating the other.

A few guidelines:

» One challenge's given every month. Members work in pairs (one fanartist and one writer).
» If a member is both a fanartist and a writer, he/she can work alone but teamwork is clearly preferred.
» A member can enter the same challenge twice as long as it is not with the same partner.
» If a member's both a fanartist and a writer, and the person he/she teams up with is also a fanartist and a writer, they can very well decide to work together on the art and the fic.
» Teams are made up of two persons only.
» When posting, give a descriptive title to your entry, use a comprehensive posting template, use a cut when posting any kind of art (small teasers are ok outside though). Always post the fic and the art teasers/descriptions in the same post in the community, however, links can point to your respective LJs.

Note: By comprehensive template, I mean: for fics, challenge number, name of the author, name of the artist you teamed up with ( link to art), title, pairing, genre, rating, warnings, etc. For art, challenge number, name of the artist, name of the writer you teamed up with ( link to fic), type of art (icons, poster, etc), resources.

General requirements for fics:

» Length: everything is accepted.
» Only completed fics.
» All ratings are allowed. G, PG, PG-13, NC-17.
» All pairings are allowed. M/F, F/F, M/M.
» All genres are allowed. AU. Gen. Character study. Crack!fic, etc.
» Quality: all fics should be beta-ed. No script form. (= no: *flashback* *end flashback* and stuff like this).

Definitions and general requirements for art:
» A collage is anything that is not wallpaper/cover/icon-sized.
» It can be any size you wish.
» It can have text as a graphic element, your own, or from the fic.

» Must have the name of the fic and the name of the writer.
» Optional: a quote from the fic.

Graphic novels.
» Only use caps allowed by the challenge, unless specified otherwise.
» Do not post a huge strip within the post, but link to the pic.

» Must meet LJ standards.
» Set of 10 icons. No more, no less.
» Include the quote from the fic which inspired each icon.

Original art.
» Size can be anything you want, and you can choose to make it fit another category like collage, icons, poster, etc...

Videos: trailers.
» Length: from 30 seconds to 1:30min. Not more.
» Quality: highest quality possible.
» Format: has to be structured as an actual trailer: video, text, music, even bits of dialogs, credits, etc...
» Music: unless the music is imposed in the challenge, you can choose your own music (with or without lyrics). If the piece is longer than the length of the trailer, edit it so it fits (try to avoid abrupt ending.) You also don't have to stick to one piece of music. You can have more than one as long as it serves the trailer and the pieces are edited right.

Videos: vids.
» Length: longer than 2mn.
» Quality: highest quality possible.
» Format: it doesn't have to be structured as a trailer, but title and author should appear at some point.

» 1024x768 or above.

Question: how are teams set up? Do we have to have someone we want to work with before we sign up for a challenge, or can we recruit a partner on the comm for a challenge we want to try?
01/06/06 - 07:48 (UTC)
Well the first two challenges I'll launch later this week-end will not require people to work in teams. I thought it would be easier at first. Now for the following challenges, I was thinking people could comment to the challenge post when they want to enter and ask if anyone want to work with them. Or I may create a special post just for that. Of course, if you already know someone who'd like to enter with before you both sign up, then it's all good.

I'll join, if no-one minds - always looking for inspiration! (and help)

:-) xx

No-one minds AT ALL... XD Welcome!

Very much looking forward to seeing what comes out of this - esp. on the art side! I was wondering if you had any thoughts on including wallpapers as one of the possible art submission formats?
01/09/06 - 15:14 (UTC)
I had thought about it but had not included wallpapers for some reason (which I can't remember now) and on second thoughts, I think including wallpapers would be great too. It'll be for Challenge 002 then :P

I'm also eager to see what comes out of this.

This is a great idea = ) *joins*.

I have a question about icons.

I think it might be nice to have quotes from the fic next to the icons, in the finished post. Can I do that? Or do the icons have to stand completely on their own?

Even if the voting goes on the icons alone, am I theoretically allowed to post something 'around' the icons?
01/12/06 - 09:01 (UTC)
Of course you can do that. It is actually an excellent idea and if you don't mind, I'll include that in the list above as a possibility.

Now it is a challenge but I don't know if there will be any voting going on, as I don't see it as a contest. Now if most members want a voting poll, there will be a voting poll.

However I have to say I had thought about having a vote but only once my list of challenges has come to an end. See, I have a list of type of challenges in my head, and I was thinking that once I came to the end of this list, I would start again with a challenge similar to the one running right now. Now, at the end of the cycle, there could very well be a voting poll for everything that's been done so far. Am I making sense?

I have a quick question. In posting, do we post our fic or artwork in a new post, or do we post it in the comments for the challenge we are answering?
01/14/06 - 10:32 (UTC)
Post it in a new post :)
01/20/06 - 14:13 (UTC)
ok, my questions that only occurred to me after posting. :)

1) tags - I love the way you set up this community. So thoughtful and professional. I wanted to make it as easy for you as possible, so I used the tags you had already invented. I know you can (and will) add the tags later, but maybe if you'd tell people to use the tags, they'd be happy to do it and maybe save you some admin time? :)

So my suggestion is to make a list of tags somewhere that people know which ones are valid, and chances are they'll use them.

2) you say that when posting, we should "use a comprehensive posting template". What did you mean by that? What does the template have to contain? If you'd make those templates for fic and art, that would be great. I just invented a header for my post. :))

01/20/06 - 14:35 (UTC)
Btw, the whole thing with comments enabled, I assume it's because otherwise you don't get the link to the post? You don't really want it to be able to leave a comment, do you?

The layout looks like you customized it - can't you add a "link" or an "edit" or and "edit tags" link there? I did that for my own journal, and you can do it in a way that the links only appear for the people who actually have the right to edit the post, so those links aren't in the way for everyone else.

Also, of course you could use the usual "Manage Entries" from the user info.

Or you could just specify that disabling comments is not allowed. ;) (did you and I overlooked it?)

Affiliate with scifi_exclusive? :)

Sure... :P

Quick clarification question.
A member can enter the same challenge twice as long as it is not with the same partner.
The challenges all seem to have two parts. Can the same pair enter both parts of the challenge (A and B) or is that entering the same challenge twice?
Hopefully that makes sense.
02/24/06 - 19:35 (UTC)
What I mean is that you can enter A and B with one person, and then enter A and B with a second person. By challenge, I mean both of the parts. :)

In regards to vids.

Me and my twin are thinking about doing this, her the writter and me the artist and the two of us swapping now and then. In anycase, when it comes to vids, which I'd always be doing, I've only a basic version of Windows Movie Maker. So, putting in dialog aswell as music is near impossible, it's one or the other really so far as I can tell. So, would I be able to get away with doing one with no dialog, or only a bit at the end?

Text on screen I can do though.
03/05/06 - 21:26 (UTC)
Of course. You wouldn't even have to add dialogs. I was just giving an example of what can be done. You can only have music (and title/credits when it's a trailer), that is more than enough.

I sure hope you and your twin will decide to join us... :)

Question: Are we aloud to post a music file and ask people to vid/paintshop/write arond it?
05/14/06 - 00:16 (UTC)
Sorry I'm only answering now. The answer is no. I'm the only one posting the challenges. However, I'm always open to ideas, so if you have a great idea for a prompt, feel free to drop me a note somewhere here or at my LJ. Email, etc. :)
12/20/06 - 17:49 (UTC)
Umm... I was wondering what's going on and when will activity resume around here. I've been missing the challenges :)
12/20/06 - 18:10 (UTC)
I know!!!! I had to take a forced hiatus in September/October because I went back to China, changed flats and all and then in October, my laptop died. I wish I had an excuse for November but no. Then December came and I still have no excuse. I've been thinking about launching a new challenge sometimes next week though, for the holidays... Just need to have an idea now. :)

Hi, I have a question about the latest challenge. It mentions original art but in the challenge requirements it says "2 pieces of art, both manips (obviously since it's complete AU) and in the form of a collage, cover, original art...". I suppose I am a little confused about this, so just to clarify, the art can be completely hand-drawn without any photo manipulation/use of photographic images in it? Thank you.
02/17/07 - 00:40 (UTC)
It's a manip in all cases but the original art since, as you wrote, it's completely hand-drawn. I realize now that I wasn't very clear on that. So to answer your question, yes, it can be completely hand-drawn, without any photo manipulation... :P
02/17/07 - 08:06 (UTC)
I have a question, if I'm looking for a writer and don't want a specific pairing to manip, am I allowed to say so?
02/17/07 - 13:19 (UTC)
Yes, of course you can say so. :)
02/21/07 - 06:32 (UTC)
I was wondering, are we allowed to have more than two pieces of art to accompany the fic?
02/21/07 - 10:22 (UTC)
For the current challenge, I wrote two pieces of art because one piece seemed not enough for an AU. However I'm always very flexible about this, because yay! more art! So two is my minimum... you can always make more. Always. :)
