Distance, Long

"Hey, Rodney."

"Hey. I still hate it here."

"You always say that."

"Well it's still true!"

"Yeah?"

"Look, can we—just this one time, can we not do the thing where I complain, and you gamely tell me that I've gotten everything I wanted, here? I know that's our usual modus operandi, and much as I might have hoped for a miraculous change of heart since yesterday, what with how I've suddenly realized all the myriad merits of this place, yes, yes, what was I thinking—I love it here! I hope I never have to leave this lovely concrete bunker in the desert! Although I do get pretty amazing cell reception, considering, but nothing's—"

The way it's supposed to be, he's going to say, but Sheppard interrupts him before he can, and his sharp, loud "Rodney!" makes Rodney realize just how worked up he's gotten himself. The hand that's not holding his phone is shaking, and he smoothes it over his thigh. Sheppard's voice is a lot quieter when he continues, "I know, okay? I know. I get it."

"Yeah."

"Yeah." Sheppard likes to put him on speakerphone, maybe because it's more like using radios, although he's not saying anything right now anyway—because they don't talk about this. Rodney hears his chair squeak, and what sounds like drawers opening and closing, and he tries to picture Sheppard in an actual office, surrounded by staplers and pen holders and motivational posters and nothing at all that lights up when he touches it, and thinking about that makes something in Rodney feel restless and wrong, makes his chest hurt like he has heartburn.

Finally, Sheppard says, "I should go—I have a briefing, a pre-mission thing. They're, uh, they're giving me a team."

Rodney's pretty sure he's not imagining the way Sheppard's voice buckles and gives a little when he says team, and the line goes quiet again, static stretching out for two, three, four seconds, and the crackling dead air conjures the particular reverberation of a puddlejumper's engine from the co-pilot's seat, the timbre of Teyla's voice and Ronon's, Sheppard's laugh and the sly grin he has just for Rodney—all the things he's lost; everything they never even had a chance to find in the first place.

Rodney squeezes his eyes shut, clears his throat. "Carson's talking about trying to get together for dinner, all of us."

"Sure. Keep me posted. I gotta—" Sheppard says, and Rodney says, "Okay, yes, bye," and he counts two, three, four of Sheppard's slow, even, faraway breaths before he hangs up.

Eeeeeeeeee, I love it I love it!!! Bing absolutely nailed the nuances--the translation from the text to the vid is perfect. *loves!*

Rodney says, "Okay, yes, bye," and he counts two, three, four of Sheppard's slow, even, faraway breaths before he hangs up.

asd;lkjdf;lkjdgkj poor Rodney! Poor boys! I love the slowdown at the end, Rodney reluctant to hang up, wanting to hang on a little bit longer.

Thank you so much, aitches! I think Bing nailed ALL of it!! *gleeees*

This is freaking fantastic! I love stories focusing on single moments... every word has so much weight. Wonderful!

bingeling You are made of awesome. I love what you've done, really, really amazing. I'm making little victory arms and noises of glee. Thank god I'm alone in the room.

Thank you SO much! I think Bing realized the best parts of the story so well, and made the whole thing that much better!

WOW! you all rock!! what a great combination of the written word and the moving visual! and the music was the big shiny bow that tied it all together!
07/17/08 - 01:38 (UTC)
Oh, thank you so much, from both of us! :)

Wow, I love this! I love everything that's *not* being said as much as being said, and all the great silences that are filled with unsaid words and thoughts and images. What a great combination for this challenge - and it's SO great to see the ideas become visuals in the vid. BRAVA, LADIES!!! SO AWESOME!

Thank you best Cates! ♥

This was wonderful. The video and how vividly you rendered their conversation (I loved Rodney's word's pushing John out of the picture and John nudging them back) and the spaces between their words and listening to John breathe and all the things they're not saying.

So lovely.
07/17/08 - 01:39 (UTC)
Eeeeee I love that part TOO. Bing did such cool stuff!!

You know, Moses & co. had to wander in the desert for 40 years before they found their way home; our guys are getting off comparatively lightly, time-wise. How long where they stuck on earth? Maybe a few months?

But still, my pore, wee, depressed woobies didn't know they were going home eventually! It makes me want to watch the 2-parter again to cheer them on as they totally finesse the SGC and escape to Pegasus.

I can't wait to see the vid! I'll comment over there.

Such woobies!! Yes, I could only leave them unhappy because I KNEW it would all be better soon. ;)

This is just so achingly sad, with the slow plonking of the piano and the way Rodney's words are flowing all over themselves, until John interrupts. I really really like the way the speed and talking over each other plays out in the video, and how the unspoken images are portrayed there. Lovely collaboration.
07/17/08 - 01:45 (UTC)
Thank you so much--I think it really was a true collaboration, and I'm glad that comes through!

Oh, this is just so awesome. As I told Jenn, I just watched The Return Pt. 1 this morning and what you guys have done fits the episode so perfectly.

he tries to picture Sheppard in an actual office, surrounded by staplers and pen holders and motivational posters and nothing at all that lights up when he touches it, and thinking about that makes something in Rodney feel restless and wrong, makes his chest hurt like he has heartburn.

OH BOYS! *rubs heart*

And I love the part in the vid where Rodney is thinking about TEAM and all their lovely faces float by. Amazing amazing stuff!
07/17/08 - 01:53 (UTC)
Thank you Ambers! I'm especially pleased to hear you think we've captured the mood of The Return! \o/
